Dreamhost-like host that doesn’t suck?

Posted by: avocado  :  Category: Hosting
OK, I'm finally sick and tired of Dreamhost screwing up and screwing me over. I've got $30/mo to spend, and am looking for something similar, and I don't just mean disk space and bandwidth.

Here are the things I like about Dreamhost:
  • Lots of disk space
  • Easy GUI setup of multiple Subversion repositories with multiple independent users per repository, served via HTTP
  • Easy GUI setup of multiple Trac instances, linked to SVN repositories
  • Django support
  • Full control over DNS records
  • Don't have to jump through hoops to get your web apps to send in-domain email to a third party mail server (I'm looking at you, cPanel hosts)
  • Unlimited completely separate FTP accounts AND SSH accounts
  • Full command line environment with a compiler and the ability to create (for instance) a custom php.ini
  • Lots of disk space

What I hate about Dreamhost:
  • Constant poorly-explained and slow-to-resolve downtime
  • Crappy, crappy, unresponsive customer support

Looking for a shared host, not a VPS, at this point. Anyone have any suggestions?

Green Web Hosting - A Corporate Initiative to Save the Planet

Posted by: Internet and Businesses Online: Web Hosting Articles from EzineArticles.com  :  Category: Hosting
Green web hosting is a new trend that is catching up with many businesses worldwide. As it gets more and more crucial to conserve energy and reduce the amount of pollution generated in the environment, web-hosting companies are going green, making a conscious effort to significantly cut down on environmentally harmful activities.

What kind of hosting setup would you recommend for my project?

Hey all,

I'm currently in the progress of devoloping a website, and looking for opinions on what kind of hosting I should use for this project.

A little info on the project:
- PHP/MySQL will be used
- I need PhpmyAdmin
- I will be using mod_rewrite to rewrite urls for seo optimization
- The first half year, im expecting 2000 - 10.000 unique visitors a day
- There will probably be a decent amount of request to the database, since we got alot of pages and features.
- In regards of HDD space, we won't need that much, since there wont be any heavy files
- Would prefer a unique ip
- I'm not sure what kind of traffic to expect, so could be nice with something scalable - but not a must

Generally, as I see it, must load will be on the database.
I would say 90% of traffic will be from Europe.

Any suggestions? Can anyone recommend a reliable provider?

GlobalSign Launches SSL Reseller Partner Program

Posted by: THN News  :  Category: News

(The Hosting News) – GlobalSign today announced the launch of its new four-tier partner program, consisting of Authorized, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels. The new program is ideal for web hosts, ISPs, VARs, domain registrars and web consultants of all sizes wishing to incorporate SSL Certificates, as a value-add or revenue generating product into their current product portfolios.

Since the launch of its SSL Reselling program back in July 2007, GlobalSign has seen an unprecedented number of resellers, large and small alike, taking advantage of the opportunities reselling SSL Certificates has to offer. Now with four levels of commitment, partners can choose the most appropriate tier to suit their individual business needs, benefiting from varying levels of pricing discounts, product integration, customer support and marketing and sales resources.

As GlobalSign believe in helping every partner launch a successful SSL offering, it extends marketing and sales resources to all resellers, regardless of partnership tier. With a newly launched partner resource center, resellers have access to advanced SSL information, product copy, multi language canned HTML campaign templates, competitive analysis and inside sales training material, enabling them to learn about, integrate and market SSL to their customers easily and most importantly effectively. Also with access to a dedicated marketing representative, as well as a traditional account manager, GlobalSign provide partners with extra bespoke advice and support – ensuring their SSL is priced, positioned and promoted correctly first time round.

GlobalSign offers resellers automated SSL Certificate application and installation processes, speeding up delivery, whilst reducing customer support issues. From a simple Ajax API to full XML based API, the reselling process has been made even simpler and is now completely integrated with hosting control panels and purchasing systems already used by many resellers such as Hosting Controller, Ubersmith and WHMCS.

“GlobalSign prides itself on helping partners to launch their SSL offerings efficiently, as well as to grow their SSL business at every stage, said Steve Waite, Chief Marketing Officer, GlobalSign. “GlobalSign’s feature packed and simplified SSL product range enables resellers to offer the most secure and highly trusted SSL products in the market, whilst also taking advantage of the SSL reselling opportunity, generating additional revenue from existing customers and adding a value add product to their portfolio”.

Other partner program key features include the ability to resell all types of GlobalSign SSL Certificates, including fast issuance Domain Validation SSL, traditional Organization Validation SSL, and the newly standardised Extended Validation (EV) SSL, (which activates the green address bar interface in IE7 & 8, Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome and Safari), as well as the options to buy in bulk on a discounted deposit or PAYG basis. GlobalSign partners can also set up their own sub-resellers and benefit from full reporting and audit trail mechanisms.

Fasthosts Enables Resellers to Move into Cloud Computing

Posted by: THN News  :  Category: News

(The Hosting News) – Fasthosts today announced the launch of Rise, an IaaS (infrastructure-as-a-service) provider enabling thousands of resellers to move into cloud computing.

Rise (www.rise-partners.co.uk), a brand new company from Fasthosts, will provide cloud and dedicated infrastructure as well as end-to-end solutions for channel partners to either resell, or offer as a white label service under their own brand.

Andy Burton, CEO of Fasthosts and Rise, said: “There is a lot of talk about cloud computing and much of it is hype right now. Vendors obviously thought that if they made enough noise then consumers would find them but that’s not how many small and mid sized businesses in particular buy IT. They’re aware of the cloud, but are often confused about what it delivers and how they can utilise it, and usually rely on a third party ‘trusted advisor and supplier’ to guide them. What we’re addressing with this launch is how SMBs buy IT, not just why they should. By providing cloud services to the channel partners, we’re enabling those companies that have the trusted relationship with the end customer to deliver the benefits in a way that is clearly understood by the customer.”

Rise will ensure that the IT and telecommunications channels have the opportunity to embrace the considerable benefits that cloud infrastructure can offer in terms of agility, scalability and cost effectiveness.

Burton continues, “This, we hope, is seen as good news for the channel after many predicted cloud computing would be bad news for businesses who traditionally sold packaged software or on-premise hardware. If anything this should give resellers an even stronger bond with their customers as they can continue to provide on-premise solutions as they always have, but can now add hosted solutions to that portfolio as well. A combination of the two looks the best bet for some years to come.”

Rise is offering value-added resellers and systems integrators the opportunity to partner with them through a new and beneficial programme to add cloud solutions to their portfolio as a complement to their existing business and expand their available market.

Rise is in turn launching a new platform called – Data Centre on Demand, an Infrastructure as a Service offering based upon the Microsoft Dynamic Data Centre. It will serve as a showcase for Microsoft’s Hyper-V technology, enabling virtualisation efficiencies in the data centre which can pass scale as well as cost- and energy-saving onto users.

Bob Tarzey analyst and director Quocirca, comments, “Many SMBs look to their resellers for advice on new technology developments, such as cloud based services. The cloud has a lot to offer, especially when it comes to commodity applications like email, backup and web hosting; enterprise class capability at SMB prices. Resellers need to look at how they rebalance their portfolios to include cloud based services and continue to help their SMB customers procure the most cost effective IT solutions. To achieve this, resellers need to identify cloud service providers with a strong reseller focus that understand the indirect sales model and are prepared to share the annuity revenue that cloud services generate.”

Jeff Lenton, In2itive Business Solutions (www.in2itive.biz) – “We’ve been party to the Fasthosts Internet Group channel proposition for a time now, and believe this is a service that the IT consultancies, VAR’s and SI’s will benefit from. The support to build cloud services into the channel proposition is clear, and the focus from the Rise account teams on the partner growth is very welcome.”
